Also, if you want to listen to the audiobook on a faster speed, you're left with really strange sounding music coming in at weird and random times. In quite a few parts, it was very tense and quick and then the narrator stops talking and it's either complete silence or music suddenly comes crashing into your ears and then stops after a few seconds. Not only is the music irritating in general, but because I was listening alongside reading, I noticed it also cuts into parts of the story where there's no need. However my main issue is the music put in between parts of the story. The narrator really felt like she was as angry or frustrated as Annie at times.

It’s been a good two years since the last edition, so what’s changed? One key enhancement is a considerable expansion of the end-of-unit study questions and tasks. If your university offers a course on it, there’s probably an introductory chapter on it in The Study of Language. And it has doubtless done so for many other courses, having become something of a modern classic it offers a solid and systematic overview of all branches of the field, from historical linguistics to second language acquisition. It’s a text with some measure of nostalgia for me, appearing on a preliminary reader list ahead of my own MSc. Appropriately, this week’s doormat delight was George Yule‘s essential Linguistics primer The Study of Language, refreshed and updated in its 8th iteration. Well, we have to live by some adage don’t we? And perhaps it’s the time of year, but shiny new tomes in the postbox do have their appeal. In fact, they reveal a most human and even pitiable young man. These poems make him seem far from the statuesque and wooden figure of the Stuart portraits or of the Weems' fables. This made him so miserable that he wrote at least two unhappy love poems in a perfect welter of bad grammar and emotional tumult. In fact he was not a particularly good "catch"-and the Virginia girls let him realize it. He was never to become a fluent conversationalist, had not been educated in England and, comparatively speaking, was a poor young man. He was probably shy and awkward in the presence of Tidewater belles. “George Washington was in love with one girl after another during his youth, but for some reason he was unsuccessful in all these early courtships.
